I come to college advising with a background in both teaching and social work. I have an M.A. in English from the University of Michigan and have taught college English at The University of Michigan, Missouri State University, and the County College of Morris. In addition, I am a trained licensed social worker with an MSW from New York University and have experience working with both children and adults.
My social work background and my experience in teaching English inform my work with high school students. I get to know my students, while creating a safe and supportive environment where they can brainstorm ideas for a personal statement, find their authentic voice and write a strong and distinctive essay. I do not write essays for my students, but rather, I coach them to write the strongest and most compelling essays they are capable of writing. Most importantly, my students know that I am here for them throughout the journey.
I have been working as an independent educational consultant for the past eleven years. I attended the Independent Educational Consultant’s Association Summer Training Institute in 2012, regularly visit college campuses, and attend workshops and conferences in order to stay up to date on trends in higher education. In addition to my work with students in New Jersey, I have been a College Summit volunteer writing coach, helping inner city high school students craft strong college application essays. I am a professional member of IECA, a member of HECA, and of NJACAC.
